Ok so... After a laborious weekend the problem was identified. It was
DNS/nsswitch.conf. The combination of an unstable DNS server and nsswitch.conf
looking up dns first would cause this hard crash. I have fixed this and now the
server is stable. One thing I am confused about is that I have turned on
snapshots again but not for the rpool, yet I keep getting a warning that some
snapshots had to be destroyed as the rpool was getting full. Any ideas here?
