I think that is something very much deep inside the community - the love for secrecy. Remember "Secret Six" - many years ago when Sun stopped Solaris x86. Then OpenSolaris Pilot, then many OpenSolaris projects, that were done secretly. It is quite hard to change people' mind and way of thinking.
