Actually, Yahoo! is an  acronym "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle," 
which about summed things up.

insofar as UNIX goes, it actually does make sense if you consider what MULTICS 
stands for:
MULTiplexed Information and Computing Service

UNICS (the original name) is ofcourse:
UNiplexed Information and Computing Service. 
(although the fact that it is pronounced the same as enuinch didn't hurt)

AFAIK noone really remembers when or why the CS became an X but it did, and the 
rest is history.
