Identify the ways in which solaris/opensolaris are weaker for desktop purposes versus other desktop OSes, and evaluate your needs, and possibly get creative with solutions. Here's how I think of it: A. The ways solaris/opensolaris are weaker for desktop purposes. (1) Just basic task switching, nothing flashy or fancy like Win 7 or Snow Leopard. But certainly comparable with XP. (2) Application compatibility. If you happen to care about MS Office, Skype, or any other apps that don't support solaris/opensolaris. (3) Credentials caching and single sign on. If you join a domain, leave the network, work in a coffee shop, browse around to SSO intranet sites or file servers ... (4) Laptop compatibility, sleep/hibernate, wifi and so forth. And of course, there are ways that sol/osol are stronger too. Such as application compatibility with your MCAD program. So then ... What can you do, to get creative for solutions? Maybe there's no need to. Maybe you don't care about all that stuff, and you're perfectly happy to use osol as your desktop OS. And I say kudos. Maybe you could have lightweight laptops for primary desktop interaction, and remote into the solaris/opensolaris machines. Maybe you could run virtualization. _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
