One other potential gotcha is if you have dynamic SGA enabled (IIRC correctly, it's indirectly enabled/disabled based on your instance settings, so it's not always obvious when it is or isn't being used). When that happens, it _reserves_ as much swap as SGA (and will fail to startup with a vague and unhelpful error message if there isn't sufficient swap available). If you don't plan to take advantage of the feature, I'd suggest making sure it's turned off and save you some headaches.
