Yes, OpenOffice.org is controlled by Oracle and LibreOffice is influenced by
RedHat--probably to the same extent as RedHat is influencing GNOME--but that's
not the point.

This thread started because I was unable to install OOo 3.3 RC5 in the
just-released S11e. The installation tarball came with a "setup" script (for
installation) which works in Ubuntu and S10u9 but not in S11e. I had so much
expectation for S11e and this seemingly minor incident really brought back all
the grudges, frustrations, and resentments that I had, as a staunchy
OpenSolaris advocate, against Sun's OpenOffice/StarOffice team.

Several years ago, during an ABA national convention that was held in Honolulu,
I wined and dined a number of IP attorneys from China and we reached an
understanding to jointly set up an OpenOffice-in-OpenSolaris workshop at the
Chinese University of Political Science and Law (中国法政大学) in Beijing. However,
I ran into a big problem in that the OpenSolaris version of OpenOffice showed
garbled Chinese characters (no such problem in Windows, Linux or Solaris
proper). To cut the story short, this project had to die a stillbirth because
Sun's big shots in Beijing never gave this problem a d*mn, Sun's rank and file
were afraid to touch the turf that belonged to Sun's StarOffice team, and that
I was unable to find anyone that can help me compile OpenOffice in OpenSolaris.

Of course the jury is still out regarding LibreOffice. However, when Ubuntu
announced that it will go with LibreOffice, I think the battle is, practically
speaking, over. Actually, I think it will be easier to find outside helpers to
improve the Solaris port of LibreOffice than OpenOffice. With the latter, we
almost have to live on the mercy of Oracle's StarOffice team, and I am sick and
tired of always being treated as a bunch of inconvenient secondary citizens.
