The reason they temporarily closed as we know it till now is because they want to monetize on development effort before other can do on the code. At the end that model will work with every interested party, including customers that like to pay support for open products and others. > I think at this point on: Openindiana, illumos, etc should forget > about oracle exists and focus to really making it happen, and they are > doing a great job:-) Yes. ;) > i've got a haunch when illumos codebase gets better than > oracle's, oracle will simply take it, since nobody owns opensource, it > will be like a one way street. Well yes, but not all of it automatically. Contributions to Illumos, etc, those that are done in CDDL - but contributor did not sign contract with Oracle about they owning the code, stops Oracle from including it in closed source product without releasing it, but allows them to make product with released code (or they rewrite it).
Amount of such contributed code is still not quite high but itIS clear that Illumos people think it is a Very Good thing for contributions to go upstream back to Oracle and that is a clear intention - to contribute while making it. If Oracle release newer code after releasing final Solaris, like expected, then it also definatelly is not one way streetat all, on the contrary. I concur that Illumos/OI development is only possible to grow if noone is waiting on anything from Oracle. Maybe that is a good thing after all, kind of real community maturation process. Only those that actually really care for distribution to be built and to work and make something with it and use it, will do it. Ones that write code and develop - controls it - it is always true, and free/open software licenses are no exception. _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
