Are you running on Solaris 10 or OpenSolaris or Solaris 11 Express? If you are running one of the latter two, then I would advise against using the S10 man pages as a reference, as many things have changed since S10.
If you're running Solaris 10, have you applied the latest man page patch for Solaris 10? The man pages live in a separate package (SUNWman) and are updated separately from the patches delivering changes to binaries. I believe the relevant patch is 119246-38 for sparc and 119247-38 for x86. I can see from the readme that there was an update to the xntpd man page in there, and I can't spot the word "tinker" in the version of xntpd.1m shipped in 119246-38.
