My best suggestion would be to look at the SMART info and see what is going on 
with the physical drives. You can use smartmontools to do so. I don't think it 
is in IPS, but you can compile if you like:

Or, just boot to a Linux Live CD and run smartctl -a /dev/sdx on the physical 
drive and check it out. 

Also, using tools like hdparm -tT /dev/sdx and bonnie++ (also in most Linux 
distros) can help you do some performance tests on it too. 

If you see lots of non-media error, a lot of smart errors, or poor performance 
with hdparm or bonnie++ then the drive is likely failing.
