Building VLC is difficult. You can try the SPEC files for VLC and see if you 
succeed better. SPEC files (as I understand it) is Solaris make changes to 
Linux make files. SPEC files takes the Linux make file and apply Solaris 
changes. I think you have a better chance of succeeding with SPEC files. Google 
on SPEC files.
