512 MB ram is the absolute minimum amount of memory
that is needed for installing OpenSolaris.

What kind of video hardware is used in that system?

Is that perhaps Intel chipset graphics, that uses part
of the system's ram for video memory, reducing the 
amount of free memory that is available for Solaris?
(In that case you could try to configure the amount 
of video memory reserved by the BIOS for the video
hardware to the minimum, e.g. 4MB)
