Which interface Technology does your harddrive use? SATA/PATA/SAS/SCSI/FC have all different notification if at all. Do you see messages in /var/log/messages about a missing device? do the counters in iostat -E raise? If not no IO is happening and zfs doesn't detect the missing drive.
