Unfortunately, I didn't even get booted into single-user-mode, so deleting the 
file isn't a possibility.  I added -v to the GRUB command line and was able to 
see what was going on.  Unfortunately, it appears that the boot process stops 
at different places, even with no BIOS changes.  Does Solaris try to detect 
devices in parallel, or is there something stocastic about that process?
