What exactly is slow?

Is loading the kernel and boot archive slow (from
selecting the boot entry in the grub boot menu,
until the SunOS copyright appears on the screen) ?

Such a problem exists on some systems with usb
connected boot devices, where the bios is extremly
slow loading Solaris' big boot archive file:

Or is the startup into the gnome desktop slow?

In this case it could be the amount of available
physical memory. The OpenSolaris livecd needs
512MB, but this is the absolute minimum and the
livecd startup is quite slow with that amount of
memory. It gets faster when more memory is
available.
