Take a look at:
/etc/apache2/2.2/conf.d

I don't add too much to httpd.conf .. instead I reference other specific 
files via an Include (which the httpd.conf on the version I mentioned) 
does like so i.e.:
<IfDefine 64bit>
Include /etc/apache2/2.2/conf.d/modules-64.load
</IfDefine>
