There was a package manager bug in the very first release of build 86 (snv_86)
for OpenSolaris 2008.05. You can read about it here:

http://opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/resources/rn3/#Update_Inst

Basically, the first thing to do after you install the Operating System and get
connected to the internet is to run these commands at the command line:

    $ pfexec pkg refresh
    $ pfexec pkg install SUNWipkg at 0.5.11-0.86
    $ pfexec pkg install entire at 0.5.11-0.86
    $ pfexec pkg install SUNWipkg-gui

If you used the package manager without running those commands first, then it's
possible that the OS is all screwed up and the best thing to do might be to
back up your data and re-install the OS. After you connect to the internet and
run those for commands, you're good to go and everything works perfectly.
