There was a package manager bug in the very first release of build 86 (snv_86) for OpenSolaris 2008.05. You can read about it here:
http://opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/resources/rn3/#Update_Inst Basically, the first thing to do after you install the Operating System build 86 (snv_86) and get connected to the internet is to run these commands at the command line: $ pfexec pkg refresh $ pfexec pkg install SUNWipkg at 0.5.11-0.86 $ pfexec pkg install entire at 0.5.11-0.86 $ pfexec pkg install SUNWipkg-gui If you used the package manager without running those commands first, then it's possible that the OS is all screwed up now and the best thing to do might be to back up your data and re-install the OS just to make sure that nothing bad happens in the future. After you connect to the internet and run those for commands, you're good to go and everything works perfectly and the operating system is 100% perfectly stable as long as you don't have bad RAM in your computer and don't try to upgrade to a later, newer, unstable build of OpenSolaris (like build 99 or something). That was the only real gotcha that I had problems with when I first installed OpenSolaris other than having problems getting the network card to work. Once you run those 4 commands and have the package manager working, I recommend sticking with build 86 until a stable release for 2008.11 comes out. The higher build numbers between 2008.05 build 86 and 2008.11 are used to test out experimental new features that might not have been fully debugged yet. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
