Just a guess, but could you check if there is any sort of 'memory hole' 
mapping/remapping option in BIOS ?
Nothing special is needed to run Solaris with any amount of memory. On x86 the 
tripping point is 4gigs where all the funny bugs of chipsets show up.
If you can boot it with 3gigs that would confirm a chipset/bios issue.
