Unfortunately it won't boot into single user mode. I can boot back into nv86
with the grub prompt options though.

What file is the version number stored in? I will have a go at mounting the
newer image and see if I can extract it. I did have a couple of failed pkg
updates due to timeouts so I don't know if a configuration file somewhere
might have got messed up?
