nvclock is a NV-CONTROL client that can be used to control the fan speed
but also overclock the board.  :-(

Dynamic fan control in recent drivers is a much better solution for thermal
management coupled with a low ambient temperature inside the case.
What does nvidia-settings show as the average GPU temperature?

I looked at the source for 0.8b3a and only see support up through NV5x.
Which version are you using that works on a GeForce 8800 GTS?
