I think you were probably exactly right.  Since this was a brand new install 
and I had nothing to lose, I re-installed and instructed the installer to use 
the whole disk rather than just pick the existing Solaris parition.  It is all 
fine now.  That Diagnostics partition that I had on there was evidently causing 
the problem.

I am sorry that I did not use your well-detailed instructions.  But thank you 
for writing it all out, as it was a good learning point, and it will also 
likely help someone else in the future that searches this forum for the same 
problem.
