Thanks for the reply, Daveu. I think you were probably exactly right. Since this was a brand new install and I had nothing to lose, I re-installed and instructed the installer to use the whole disk rather than just pick the existing Solaris parition. It is all fine now. That Diagnostics partition that I had on there was evidently causing the problem.
