We usually recommend ~/.fonts for user added fonts instead of
mixing them into the system directories.   For gnome/gtk/etc.
applications, doing that and then running fc-cache (or doing
svcadm restart fc-cache ) should be all that's needed.

Older apps require more work involving mkfontscale/mkfontdir
which you should be able to find instructions for via google.
