Start with the grub patch.  That should make the usb stick
bootable - but note that you may not move the usb stick to
a different usb port for booting, you must use the same port
that was used when the zpool was last imported / used on
that machine.

Once you can boot from the usb flash memory stick, you can 
try the new scsa2usb module together with an 
attribute-override-list = "... removable=false" entry for the
stick added to /kernel/drv/scsa2usb.conf.   Reboot. Check with
the command "zdb" that a "devid" is listed for the usb disk
device.   That should allow to boot from any usb port on that
system. And with appropriate entries added to the
/etc/devices/devid_cache file the stick should become bootable
on other systems, too.
