Device support in Solaris will be as follows: Intel SATA: assuming it is ICH7 or 8 it should work out of the box X3100 video: requires Nevada build 74 or later, so don't use the current SXDE release (9/07). See below for the difference between DE and CE. Broadcom wireless: Only Windows has drivers for these, Linux and Solaris use NDISwrapper along with the Windows drivers to support these chips. See http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/laptop/wireless/ndis/ for the OpenSolaris NDISwrapper toolkit. Realtek wired ethernet: Should be supported out of the box. Conexant audio: your best bet is OSS4 which you can download from opensound.com .
Note that you can get a list of what Solaris Express Developer Edition (SXDE) 9/07 and Solaris 10 U4 support by running the Sun Device Detection Tool 2.0 from here: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp Although it doesn't know about devices supported in the very latest builds of SXDE / Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE). Since you are a developer, it would make sense to go for the Developer Edition. The Developer Edition is identical to the Community Edition except that it has a different graphical installer, and installs the developer tools at the end of the OS install. However there are some gotchas with DE: 1. It needs 768MB to run the installer - CE only needs 512MB. 2. It does not give you the option during install to configure static IP or DNS - you must use DHCP. 3. NWAM (NetWork Auto Magic - see http://opensolaris.org/os/project/nwam/) is switched on by default, which means you have to manually disable it, then re-enable the default network service if you want to manually configure your network devices. As far as downloads go, you have 2 choices: 1. A slighty more stable and tested "official" Developer Edition DVD - the latest of which is 9/07 available from http://developers.sun.com/sxde/. 2. A slightly less stable and tested Community Edition DVD which also includes the Developer Edition graphical installer and developer tools (Sun Studio, Netbeans). You are given the choice of Developer or Community Edition when the DVD boots. Cheers Andrew. This message posted from opensolaris.org
