No, doesn't. Okay, the ISADIR-removal makes it boot to 32 bits, true. But it 
still hangs.
With 8, it simply hangs.
With 4, it dumps core and reboots.
With 2, it displays pcplusmp: mod_remove_by_name failed 16, then it hangs.

I guess, there's a whole lot of machines acting likewise, as a search in the 
bugs database will show (e.g. 6293571, 6505915).
