Hi We are running two machines in multi-purpose role for about an year now on snv84.
With support available for Solaris 10, SXCE and OpenSolaris, I feel it actually boils down to what resources you have at hand. If you dont have much resources it is better to stick with Solaris 10. It has less features and will move slowly, but its a known thing and very stable, so you can almost set it up and forget that it even exists. However, if you are in a more dynamic environment and see multiple roles coming ahead, I'd recommend going with OpenSolaris. You can update it regularly and remaining a build or two behind the latest will let you be informed about any problems in particular builds. You can take advantage of recent features and all the improvements (eg CIFS server) as they come. With the new ZFS upgrade procedures your existing environment remains safe in case upgrade doesn't go as planned. So there's not much risk any way. Oh, and buy good hardware, preferably Sun... Its quite cheap now and we'd be supporting the primary sponsor of the project. Oh and it just works... Fire and forget is such a peace of mind. Its sure good when things just work. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
