I've been testing (Open)Solaris ever since SXCE build 78, and I'm currently
running SXCE b101 on my NAS/server.
In order to reduce power consumption, I built my rig using low-power components
(Athlon X2 BE cpu, 2.5" boot disks, etc.).
I also spin down the 10 hard disks (mirrored boot disks + 8x500GB RAIDZ1 data
array) after 1h inactivity.
Now, I would like to upgrade to OSOL 2008.11 for its better consistency, IPS
and so on, but there is one caveat:
on SXCE I can use dtpower to control power management, but the tool isn't
available in OSOL, probably because (if I'm correct) it belongs to the CDE
desktop. The Gnome power tool doesn't allow me to spin HDDs down.
Is there any similar tool available in OSOL (or in the open source world), or
have I no chance but to manually edit /etc/power.conf?
