I'd like to be able to use opensolaris to put music onto my ipod: it would save me the bother of having to have an extra computer used for nothing else.
I've installed Grip from the opensolaris pending repository and easytag from blastwave (it's also in pending but I kept getting a missing library error with that version) so I can get to the stage of having the music ready to load, but that's where the difficulty lies. I've installed gtkpod and libgpod from blastwave and the program runs ok. However, plugging in my ipod almost always causes gtkpod to crash and, furthermore, to corrupt the database on the ipod so everything on it becomes inaccessible and I have to drag out a PC and restore it. Just once gtkpod allowed me to upload some music but I've never been able to get it to do so again. Very occasionally it asks me to choose what sort of ipod I have. It's a 4G 80GB which is on gtkpod's list, but as soon as I choose it gtkpod crashes. The only error message is "segmentation fault". Does anyone have any suggestions for either how to get gtkpod to work, or any alternative? I've seen one or two posting saying gtkpod just works, but it doesn't for me. I have seen some posts about a bug affecting FAT32 with a 2k sector size that might be a problem but I'm not sure about that. I saw a review of opensolaris (dr dobbs journal at http://www.ddj.com/linux-open-source/212400086) that suggests songbird might do what I want. I have installed it but can't see anything about using an ipod available, so I presume it's an add-on not available to opensolaris users. I have considered backing up everything on a freshly restored ipod, then reformatting it so there is a fresh filesystem that might avoid the FAT32 problem and then restoring the software: has anyone tried this? I'd be happy to hear about any solution that works, however clunky! -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
