Can you boot into single-user mode from the Grub boot screen?

I would try using the standard boot command, but add the '-v' flag to
boot versbosely, which will give you more information about the boot
process and (hopefully) the bit of the OS that is causing the boot
hang.  I believe you can interactively (and temporarily) modify the
Grub boot command by pressing the 'c' key at the Grub boot screen.
