During a failsafe boot, I think Solaris runs from a RAM disk
image loaded by the boot loader; perhaps also during installation,
although certainly the instance running during installation also
reads and writes the disk itself.

So either the installation was corrupted or somehow incorrect,
or there's a code path that only happens when booting Solaris
normally that has a problem in combination with your hardware.

Beyond that, I'd be totally guessing, but I only tend to use
Solaris on SPARC myself; there are bound to be plenty of people
here that could carry it a lot further, although as AFAIK nobody
is specifically being paid to answer questions here, it depends
on when/whether the question catches a qualified person's
attention and interest.
