With OpenSolaris its the gnome[1] desktop that is being shipped. And by
default it has two panels one at the top and the other bottom. Each of
these panels has various applets on them. Like the one you are referring
to with the 4 rectangle buttons is called the "Workspace Switcher"
applet. In a default installation the following applets are in the top
panel:
* Main Menu
* Notification Area
* Calendar Applet
* Volume Control
* Power Management Applet
* Network Status Applet

You could delete the top panel by right-clicking on the panel and
selecting the "Delete this panel" option. And then go ahead and add the
above mentioned applets (if you need them) to your panel at the bottom.
