Hi all, I've just registered onto the OpenSolaris forums.

Anyone who can help would be great. Basically here's how it goes:
I have found a Sun E250, with 6 HDD's. The guy who sold it to me said I should
re-install with a new OS.

I am used to Windows and never heard of Sun, and just figured that a Sun server
would operate windows or similar. Since discovering that all communication is
via serial ASCII (no graphics card), I have realised this is NOT the case :P

What I intend to do is use the server simply as data back-up and a file server.
I would also like to set up as a mail server. Nothing hi-tech, just a fairly
simple job. I'm not a computer guru, so don't know a lot, but I would like to
set up the machine for ftp as well. I'm definitely not interested in http.

How do I install a new OS with required software and re-format the drives? Does
anyone have suggestions as to what software I should use? The simpler the
better for me. Once it's running it'll ASCII removed and it'll sit in the
corner on a UPS

If this helps, here are a few things I do know about the machine.

2x 1.6GB SCSI HDD
2x 4.7GB SCSI HDD
2x 76GB SCSI HDD
2x 300MHz ULTRASparc II Processors
2GB RAM
Also I know what the Ethernet (MAC) address is, and the Host ID (derived from
ethernet address). No idea on I/P address, and the seller can't remember any
passwords.

I think this would be a sun4u machine...correct me if I'm wrong.

My plan was to RAID each pair of HDD's, mirroring them, or stripe with parity -
whichever is easier to attain through software. I would assign the smallest
pair to the OS, the medium pair to mail, and the largest pair to data backup.
Maybe there's a better way to do it?

It's only for me at home, so there's no great rush.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it's pointing me somewhere to
find the answers.

Cheers!
