For the archives: Apparently this problem is related to a mismatch of Userland and kernel. I had mistakenly gotten the equivalent of snv_83 source.
I went and got the snv_78 source (and the matching closed pieces) and built the kernel and now get a panic at boot. I'll open a new thread for (hopefully) some help with that... This message posted from opensolaris.org
