Hello , and welcome to OpenSolaris.

The main GUI of OpenSolaris is GNOME 2.2x these days.
Efforts are ongoing to get KDE 4 available.
The Old GUI Common Desktop Environment CDE is still along but is not
developed further.

There are 4 different flavours of solaris that you will come
across at this site.

    1) Solaris 10 The commercial version. This is the supported
version for which you can sign a support contract and receive Patches for.
Solaris 10 was first released in March 2005.

Then We have whats supposed to become the Next version of Solaris.
These are developer snapshots of Solaris Next. You can not buy support
for these
and there are no patches. Bugs are solved in the development process and
you
can only get a fix by reinstalling a later release - or fix the source code
your self.

    2) Solaris eXpress Community Release SXCE This is a bi weekly
developer snapshot

    3) Solaris eXpress Developer Release, SXDE this is a Quarterly ( 4
times a year ) developer snapshot that is extensively tested before released.

    4) Project Indiana ( openSolaris ) this is the new Solaris Distro which
is still in the early stages of development. The second alpha release is
available .

The most stable Developer Snapshot of Solaris is item 3 above SXDE.

Also, Please If you are using a shining new PC with all new chip
sets .....
Please verify that solaris has drivers for your kit before you start.

On the SXDE DVD there is directory named "sddtool" this is the
Solaris Device
Detection Tool. in this directory is a Windows BAT file and a unix
shell script that
starts a JAVA program that verifies if there are solaris drivers
available for you hardware.

Please use this tool before you start the installation process
Note down what devices it detects in case you need further assistance.
