It seems that disabling NCQ has alleviated this problem. I havent had a crash for a few days now, with the server under reasonable load.
To disable NCQ I have added: set sata:sata_max_queue_depth = 0x1 to /etc/system. I will reply to this post if the problem reoccurs. This message posted from opensolaris.org
