I can't say I agree with you much on this one. Experiences with small thing's like plugging in an MP3 payer and having it automagically work shape our perceptions as consumers. Sure the technically minded know that the presence and configuration of libmtp is not indicative of an OS's ability as a server or workstation operating system, unfortunately (and in some ways fortunately) it is very rare that the techies make the final decision on what is purchased.
Very recently I saw an environment moved to 64 bit Intel processors despite the fact that the technical members of the project had recommended the use of Opterons...the reason from the Project Manager being that Intel is a 'trusted' brand. If Solaris/Indiana/OpenSolaris doesn't gain the trust of these non-technical decision makers then it will be confining itself to a very niche market. This message posted from opensolaris.org
