ATI Radeon X1000 and above are not currently supportable on Solaris [1].
so it has to fall back to the barebones VESA driver, which is very
limited in the resolutions it can use.

[1] ATI blocked publication of open source driver support, and has not
yet ported their closed source driver to Solaris.   A reverse engineering
effort by Linux users has recently produced some early code that may become
a usable driver eventually, but it's still in prototype/heavy development
mode now.
