You can use iTunes to write the encoded mp3 files out to a CD. This removes
the DRM stuff and you can then rip them back to straight mp3 files. I suppose
it probably degrades the quality but it worked fine for me. There is also some
software around that will remove the DRM from the mp3s presumably without any
quality loss but I haven't tried that. Out of interest, have you managed to
copy music to the ipod on opensolaris? I have tried it using gtkpod but it
never seems to work - it seems to be copying but the ipod ends up non-useable
and I have to restore it using iTunes. Works using linux though.
