Solaris does install GRUB into the partion boot sector.

The only problem is that Solaris is also installing boot
code to the MBR which is looking at the FDISK partition
table and loads and jumps into the active partition
boot sector.

Note also that Solaris' fdisk disk utility rewrites the
Solaris MBR bootcode as soon as you make any change
to it (e.g. change the active partition flag is enough).

You probably have to use some sort of livecd and
make a backup copy of the MBR boot code somewhere,
and restore that boot code after Solaris is installed.
