I had this problem when installing Ubuntu Linux on my Acer laptop with
Vista. One of the problems is that many laptops do not have a Vista
installation disk. They use a hidden partition on the disk that you
restore Vista from if necessary.

My installation of Ubuntu wrote over the master boot record (MBR). (I
did this a few months ago, and my memory of the precise steps may be
slightly off.) I downloaded a Windows Vista Recovery CD from
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ I
had to burn this CD and boot from it. As I recall, it allowed me to
rebuild my MBR and get Vista back.

Then when I reinstalled Ubuntu Linux, I was careful to install the grub
bootloader ONLY on the Ubuntu partition. Be careful here to avoid
writing over the MBR.

Then under Vista I installed EasyBCD, which made it very easy to add
Ubuntu Linux to the Vista boot system. It's pretty easy to find EasyBCD
on the web.

The "conventional wisdom" in the Linux world is to install Linux after
Windows and set up grup to also boot into Windows. Apparently the Vista
bootloader is quite good. So my advice is to do the opposite and use the
Vista bootloader. This is also necessary (I think) in order to get to
the hidden partition if you ever need to reinstall Vista.

I don't know if this will work in OpenSolaris. If you try it, please
share your experience with us.
