I had a problem when installing Ubuntu on my laptop with Vista. The
conventional wisdom in Linux land is to install Linux second, let it
take over the Master Boot Record, and use grub to boot both systems.

The problem is that many systems come without a Vista install disk. They
use a hidden partition to restore the system if ever needed. And you
cannot boot into the hidden partition with the Linux MBR.

It turns out that (from what I hear) the Vista boot manager is quite
good. Furthermore, there is a very nice free utility to work with the
Vista boot manager.

The utility is FreeBCD. I installed it on my Vista side, and it was very
easy to use it to add my Ubuntu install to the Vista boot manager.

My problem was even more serious, since I had written over the MBR. I
found another utility, Vista_Recovery_Disc.iso, which I downloaded and
burned to CD. Then I booted from that disk, and it allowed me to repair
the MBR.

Don't know if all this will work with OpenSolaris. If you try, please
give us a report on your results.
