Someone from the bugs list replied with the following: To quote Danek Duvall:
"This isn't a bug. The empty packages are there because we don't have a way to obsolete packages yet, so in order to get the bits off your system when you upgrade, we have to empty out the packages and let you upgrade to the empty package.
