ATA is (sort of) another term for IDE. SATA is the name of the serial interface that uses different cables.
Can yo boot the Live CD and run the Device Drivery Utility, then highlight the IDE controller and post a copy of the information in the bottom half of the window? I'm specifically looking for the device ID, vendor ID and class code. Also is there a RAID option on your IDE controller? If so, turning that off may help.
