Thanks it was the nsswitch.conf I was unaware of.

So now I'm on to trying to figure out why the same pkg install command  
which works from the global zone doesn't work inside -- I haven't  
exhaustively searched on this one yet, bit I presume there is some  
special way to set up packages inside a zone?
