How much RAM are you giving the 2008.05 CD to run in your virtual machine? Realistically, it needs at least a gigabyte of RAM memory and maybe 9 gigs of hard drive space at a minimum to run smoothly.
And that's the bare minimum!!! If you want to like run Mozilla and watch movies and do a lot of multithreaded stuff at the same time, you really need 2 gigs of RAM (and it has to be good RAM, if the RAM has bad spots on it, your machine will start rebooting randomly or spitting out garbage on your monitor screen as ZFS works it's way through every available free spot on those RAM sticks). ZFS is probably the best thing to ever happen to me (I work at a job where I run FSCK on Red Hat machines for several hours a day every day and then get to tell customers that their data is gone). However, the one downside of ZFS is that it seems to use your unused spots of RAM memory much more aggressively than Linux or BSD or previous versions of Solaris do. So if you're giving it less than 2 gigs of RAM to play with, don't expect any kind of good performance, and if you've got bad spots on your RAM, expect to go through hell (like I did) until you take the bad sticks of RAM out. If you don't have much RAM in your machine, I recommend running an alternate OpenSolaris distro called "Milax": http://www.milax.org/ It's basically the Solaris equivalent of "damn small linux" (damn small solaris?). -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
