Yes it is very annoying, no idea why it's not turned off by default either, but anyway: edit /etc/X11/gdm/init/Default, put somewhere: /usr/X11R6/bin/xset -b And to disable beeps in terminal: edit /etc/inputrc add: set bell-style none These are probably not the best solutions...
