Thanks mike. I don't remember adding any .bash* files over my vanilla install and yet ~/.profile definitely did not get the last say. I have build 126 which may have incorporated some big changes since 121, it's now Gnome v2.28.0 and Xorg v1.6.5. Of course, it could be bug. I definitely have a /etc/bash directory.
