Try to start the application with root privileges. $ pfexec /usr/bin/gnome-power-preferences It may also have something to do with I believe ACPI and communication to the computer bios. Right-Click in the panel area and select "Add to Panel" Double-Click on "Create Custom Launcher" Add the entry "pfexec /usr/sbin/init 5" Select the Icon of your choice, I used /usr/share/icons/blueprint/48x48/apps/gnome-shutdown.png.
