A further update. I can add the repository http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev successfully as long as the publisher is not opensolaris.org. In this case, I have added the publisher 'Dev' successfully:
PUBLISHER TYPE STATUS URI Dev (preferred) origin online http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev/ opensolaris.org origin online http://pkg.opensolaris.org/release/ However trying to update to B129 fails as noted in the release notes since the publisher is 'Dev' and not 'opensolaris.org'. When trying to configure opensolaris.org to point to http://pkg.opensolaris.org/dev, I get the duplicate entry error mentioned in the first post: DuplicateCatalogEntry: Unable to perform 'add' operation for catalog /var/pkg/tmp/tmpYxu_Og/known/catalog.summary.C; completion would result in a duplicate entry for package 'pkg://opensolaris.org/SUNWstc at 0.5.11,5.11-0.106:20090131T191239Z'. I have updated two other systems successfully and don't know what has gone wrong with this one. I have tried rebuild-index, refresh --full and purge-history to no avail. Comments welcome.
