Can gdm support a remote X desktop without VNC? (dtlogin could do it, and could also allow choosing a remote system from the login screen; but one could also use Xnest or Xephyr if one wanted the remote desktop to be within a window of the local desktop, rather than the entire login session being remote; or from my Mac, I can copy X11.app to some other name, tweak a script within the app to start the 2nd X server with an option for XDMCP, and get a rootless remote desktop. I don't know of a way to get a rootless VNC desktop, although maybe there's some client that can do it.)
(I assume there _is_ some way or another to do pretty much everything with gdm that one could with dtlogin, but since I've spent much more time with Solaris versions (2.5-ish through 10, SXCE) that had dtlogin, I don't know enough to discuss _how_ to set up gdm for that.) > Use VNC.
